Health Policy
Child Health Policy
If your child is sick, please seek medical help and ensure the child fully recovers before resuming school. Children who are ill cannot be appropriately cared for in the school setting. Parents need to have alternate care available when this occurs. Examples of health symptoms that require exclusion from the school include ( but are not limited to) fever, persistent diarrhoea, Conjunctivitis, vomiting, Jaundice, Difficulty in breathing, sore throat, measles or chicken pox and any other condition in which the child takes ill and is unable to participate in classroom activities or that which compromises the health and safety of others. When a child becomes sick in the school, KPS will provide a place for the child to rest and the parent or emergency contact person will be notified of the illness by the child's teacher and must pick the child up within one hour.
Supporting Children with Medication
If a child develops symptoms which indicate a need for over-the-counter medication (i.e cough syrup, pain reliever e.t.c) while in school, the medication will only be given under the verbal consent from the parent. Such verbal consent, dosages and the time that the medication was given to the child will be documented in the communication book by the person who administered it.
Medication/Health Issues
School board policy expressly states that school personnel cannot dispense medication to students unless it is a long-term requirement and unless all forms from indemnifying the school are completed, including parent signature, and on file at the school. Under no circumstances will a child be permitted to carry any type of medication into school. This includes all types of medications such as aspirin, Tylenol, cough drops or the like. Approved medication must be left in the office until medication time. Student health information will be collected and documented by the school nurse.
Accidents/Illness/Injury
If a child is seriously injured in an accident or becomes seriously ill at school, the parent or guardian will be called immediately. If the parent cannot be reached, we will attempt to contact the adult listed on the emergency form. Seriously ill or injured children will be transported to the nearest hospital (or hospital advised by the parents). For this reason it is very important that parent fill the Emergency Information Form and keep all telephone numbers and addresses current. Please notify the school if you change addresses or telephone numbers during the year. The importance of maintaining updated information cannot be overemphasized. Doctors/emergency rooms will NOT treat children without parental consent, and in the event of an emergency we must be able to reach parents.
