Attendance, Absence from School & Punctuality

Parents should kindly notify the school if and when their child will be absent from school for whatever reason. Regular attendance is critical to ensure success in school.  All children should be in attendance each day that they are not ill.

Children returning to school after an absence must bring a written statement, signed by a parent, explaining the reason for the absence.  If you know ahead of time your child will be absent, please call the school.  KPS policy will be followed regarding the contacting of parents of children who have five or more unexcused absences (absences without a parent note).  Upon returning to school after an absence, students MUST present a note from the parent to the teacher.

The school considers the following as the only valid reasons for a child to be absent from school:

  • The child is ill
  • A death in the immediate family
  • A serious family emergency
  • Religious holiday
  • Steps to follow when absent:

  • Have parent or guardian call the school the day of the absence before 9:30 a.m.
  • Send a note, on the next day, to the office explaining the absence. Students who do not bring notes are considered truant.
  • Note: It is the student’s responsibility to make up all assignments, projects and tests he/she missed during the absence.
