Parental Responsibilities
Parents play a critical role in their child’s education. All parents are to:
- Monitor their child’s work daily
- Ensure that their child arrives at school on time every day
- Check and adhere to deadlines for long-term assignments/projects
- Sign and return all tests, progress reports, and behaviour notices
- Send notes for absences
- Adhere to deadlines for field trips and sports activities
- Purchase supplies for their child on time
- Attend parent meetings/conferences
- Assist the classroom teacher in working with their child
- Participate in parent organization activities
- Ensure that your child adheres to the school uniform policy
Information For Visitors
Parents and other visitors to our school are required to sign in at the main entrance and receive a visitor’s pass. This procedure is strictly enforced to maintain a safe environment within the school building.
Safety & Security
Your child’s safety is a top priority at KPS. The doors to the school remain locked throughout the day. Children are dropped with the school secretary and are picked up from the school office. Pupils will be released only to those persons listed on the authorisation form at the time of registration. Identification will be required if any other person is picking up your child.
The Director/Head of School must be notified in advance if someone not on the consent form is picking up the child/children. In the event that the school is not notified, the pupil will be kept in school until the Director/Head of School can contact the parent by telephone or any other means possible.
Attendance, Absence from School & Punctuality
Parents should kindly notify the school if and when their child will be absent for any reason. Regular attendance is critical to ensure success in school. All children should attend each day they are not ill.
Children returning to school after an absence must bring a written statement, signed by a parent, explaining the reason for the absence. If you know ahead of time your child will be absent, please call the school. KPS policy will be followed regarding the contacting of parents of children who have five or more unexcused absences (absences without a parent note). Upon returning to school after an absence, students MUST present a note from the parent to the teacher.
The school considers the following as the only valid reasons for a child to be absent from school:
- The child is ill
- A death in the immediate family
- A serious family emergency
- Religious holiday
Steps to follow when absent:
- Have the parent or guardian call the school the day of the absence before 9:30 a.m.
- Send a note on the next day to the office explaining the absence. Students who do not bring notes are considered truant.
Note: It is the student’s responsibility to make up all assignments, projects, and tests he/she missed during their absence.
Arrival, Closure & Punctuality
Regular school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. All students are expected to leave the school grounds promptly at 3:00 p.m. unless they are participating in an after school activity.
Where school bus transport services are not being subscribed to, prompt drop-off and pick up will be highly appreciated. Parents should please note that the school closes by 2pm every day, monetary fine of N1,000 per hour will be applied to any child picked after 3pm and will be surcharged with the subsequent term school fees. Where school bus transport services are being offered, parents should ensure that children are ready on time for the school bus pick up as the drivers have been instructed not to wait more than 3 minutes.
The school gate is locked by 8.45am. No pupil will be allowed into the school once the gate is locked.
Health Policy
Child Health Policy
If your child is sick, please seek medical help and ensure the child fully recovers before resuming school. Children who are ill cannot be appropriately cared for in the school setting. Parents need to have alternate care available when this occurs. Examples of health symptoms that require exclusion from the school include ( but are not limited to) fever, persistent diarrhoea, Conjunctivitis, vomiting, Jaundice, Difficulty in breathing, sore throat, measles or chicken pox, and any other condition in which the child takes ill and is unable to participate in classroom activities or that which compromises the health and safety of others. When a child becomes sick in the school, KPS will provide a place for the child to rest and the parent or emergency contact person will be notified of the illness by the child’s teacher and must pick the child up within one hour.
Supporting Children with Medication
If a child develops symptoms which indicate a need for over-the-counter medication (i.e., cough syrup, pain reliever, etc.) while in school, the medication will only be given under the verbal consent from the parent. Such verbal consent, dosages and the time that the medication was given to the child will be documented in the communication book by the person who administered it.
Medication/Health Issues
School board policy expressly states that school personnel cannot dispense medication to students unless it is a long-term requirement and unless all forms from indemnifying the school are completed, including parent’s signature, and are on file at the school. Under no circumstances will a child be permitted to carry any type of medication into school. This includes all types of medications such as aspirin, Tylenol, cough drops, or the like. Approved medication must be left in the office until medication time. Student health information will be collected and documented by the school nurse.
Accidents/Illness/Injury
If a child is seriously injured in an accident or becomes seriously ill at school, the parent or guardian will be called immediately. If the parent cannot be reached, we will attempt to contact the adult listed on the emergency form. Seriously ill or injured children will be transported to the nearest hospital (or hospital advised by the parents). For this reason, it is very important that parents fill out the Emergency Information Form and keep all telephone numbers and addresses current. Please notify the school if you change addresses or telephone numbers during the year. The importance of maintaining updated information cannot be overemphasized. Doctors/emergency rooms will NOT treat children without parental consent, and in the event of an emergency, we must be able to reach parents.
Communication
At KPS, we understand the importance of communication between home and school in order to ensure the success of your child. At KPS, we run an open-door policy. We encourage parents to feel free to discuss any concerns they have with their child’s teacher or the School Director. It may not be possible for you to have a long conversation with your child’s teacher at drop-off or pick-up times, as the teachers are responsible for supervising all of the children in their classroom. If you have any special concerns, kindly feel free to walk in and see the school Director. A daily report on the progress of your child, as well as the academic activities, is sent home; the daily report book also serves as a means of communication between the class teacher and the parents.
